Integrating Academics & SEL in Middle and High School Classrooms
In the midst of the pandemic, students are struggling to activate the academic and social-emotional skills needed to complete complex, grade-appropriate work. In order to support these students, educators need practical, manageable strategies for integrating social-emotional learning in their content areas. This webinar series offers actionable ideas for teaching and assessing the five CASEL competencies of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationships Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making. By integrating SEL and academics, educators can strengthen students’ subject-specific skills, increase equity, get to know their kids better, and reconnect with their love of teaching.
Session 3: Fostering Social Awareness Skills in Academic Classes
In this session, educators learn specific strategies to support students as they activate and amplify their social awareness skills by exploring their identities in relation to others in the classroom, in the community, and in the curriculum. Participants learn manageable, ongoing routines to prompt perspective-taking and empathy development, contributing to a classroom culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
